A few musts for your SHTF AR.

I notice a lot of people are buying AR's. Many buying them in lieu of the assault weapons ban that's sure to come if a democrat gets elected. Some are varmint or hunting rifles, and some are being used as range, competition, or defensive rifles. There are a few upgrades and tune ups that need to be made to keep them reliable and in the fight. I Highly recommend the following upgrades for your AR15:

1. Make sure the gas key on the bolt carrier is properly staked.
2. Make sure the castle nut is properly staked.
3. Upgrade to a higher quality bolt, Preferably one that is magnetic particle tested, and shot peened.
4. Make sure the bolt includes a heavy duty extractor with o-ring, and black insert.

Many of the off the shelf rifles don't come with these upgrades as standard. Your Colts, LMTs, and Noveske rifles tend to offer these enhancements as standard protocol. Your Bushmasters, DPMS etc.. not so much. Making these upgrades will go a long way in ensuring the reliability of your rifle should you decide to take a carbine class, or you need the rifle to save your hide one day. If your rifle is simply a plinker, and you don't plan to use it as a defensive tool, then these upgrades can be made over time as the parts wear or break.

The above parts can be found at BRAVO.

I really should pick up some spares parts for my AR, but I really haven't gotten around to it.

Yeah the Bravo parts are top notch.

I guess it is a good idea to have spare parts for an AR. It seems that my spare parts turned into a second rifle (lol). I'm just wondering if you shoot competition with your AR? The National Matches are held at Camp Perry, OH during the week of July 27th. This will be my second year, and I really looking forward to it. Check it out at http://www.odcmp.com/NationalMatches.htm

How does one check his stake and castle nut?? (1 & 2 above)

TIA

The slots on the castle nut that are closest to receiver plate are where you stake it. There should be a piece of metal from the receiver plate that has been pushed into one of the little slots on the castle nut.

If yours is not done, which is most likely the case, you can get a small round punch and do it yourself.
